Willmott Dixon is leading the development of a NetZero carbon school at Silverwood School's Rowde campus near Devizes, Wiltshire. This £29 million project aims to provide 350 places for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) across early years to post-16 levels.
Key Features of the Development:
Sustainable Design: The new facilities are designed to achieve net-zero carbon operation. This includes the use of biomass boilers and extensive photovoltaic solar panels to harness renewable energy. Willmott Dixon's EnergySynergy™ service will monitor energy performance to ensure targets are met post-occupancy.
Biodiversity Initiatives: The project includes ecological enhancements such as improved natural grassland and increased hedgerows, resulting in a 14% biodiversity net gain. Additionally, 350 trees have been planted to further support local biodiversity.
Modern Educational Facilities: The development features specialist teaching spaces, therapeutic support areas, and quiet dining facilities. Plans also include a hydrotherapy pool, an all-weather sports pitch, and new playing fields. The design emphasizes natural daylighting and ventilation to create a comfortable learning environment.
Community Engagement: Pupils, staff, and governors have actively participated in the development process, including a "topping out" ceremony to mark the building's progress.
Construction commenced in April 2022, with the new facilities expected to be operational by autumn 2023. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable educational facilities for SEND students in the region.
